How animals distribute themselves in space: energy landscapes of Antarctic avian predators

چکیده
Abstract Background Energy landscapes provide an approach to the mechanistic basis of spatial ecology and decision-making in animals. This is based on quantification variation energy costs movements through a given environment, as well how these vary time for different animal populations. Organisms diverse fish, mammals, birds will move areas landscape that result minimised maximised gain. Recently, have been used link gain variable foraging breeding success, revealing their potential use understanding demographic changes. Methods Using GPS-temperature-depth tri-axial accelerometer loggers, stable isotope molecular analyses diet, leucocyte counts, we studied response gentoo ( Pygoscelis papua ) chinstrap antarcticus penguins resources. We compared species penguin populations with contrasting population trends. Results Between populations, from Livingston Island (Antarctica), site positive trends, foraged sectors implied lower per gained those around New (Falkland/Malvinas Islands; sub-Antarctic), fluctuating foraging, success species, bottom time, proxy They also showed physiological stress, revealed by higher than penguins. In terms found flexible but narrow niche chinstraps. Conclusions The incurred Livingston, may favour would explain species’ trend Antarctic Peninsula. gentoos Antarctica not negative trend. Altogether, our results suggest between mediated condition.

How to quantify energy landscapes of solids.
We explore whether the topology of energy landscapes in chemical systems obeys any rules and what these rules are. To answer this and related questions we use several tools: (i) Reduced energy surface and its density of states, (ii) descriptor of structure called fingerprint function, which can be represented as a one-dimensional function or a vector in abstract multidimensional space, (iii) de...

متن کاملFunnels in Energy Landscapes
Local minima and the saddle points separating them in the energy landscape are known to dominate the dynamics of biopolymer folding. Here we introduce a notion of a “folding funnel” that is concisely defined in terms of energy minima and saddle points, while at the same time conforming to a notion of a “folding funnel” as it is discussed in the protein folding literature. متن کاملInnate or learned acoustic recognition of avian predators in rodents?
Calls of avian predators potentially predict danger for murine rodents. Indeed, exposure of field-experienced rodents to owl calls induces defensive behavior suggesting that recognition of vocalizations of avian predators is innate. To address this hypothesis, we investigated whether laboratory-reared and predator-naive rodents (mice, gerbils, rats) express defensive behavior in response to cal...
